My city which is very well known as city of Nizam's, city of Pearls, city of Lakes, hub for Information Technology (IT). Hyderabad experienced a remarkable augmentation in almost all sectors since the last decade of 20th century, this change was mainly due to the IT boom and liberalization of Indian economy. Since then the city never looked back. With life moving as fast as the MMTS and changing lifestyle, one forgot the good olden days where during summer kids got to play in the ponds, the Sunday morning fish market at the lakes, evening walks at the bunds, and hide n seek in the trees..... Is my city loosing its charm?
As the city has grown rapidly over the years, the quality of environment is declining day by day. The city is now turning in to a concrete jungle with worst climatic changes, increasing air pollution, severe drinking water problems and depleting watersheds. The city which was once home for numerous lakes is now pledging workshops for clean and safe drinking water. Urbanization, is for sure important for the growth of a city, but what is the situation of a clean green city when urbanization and industrialization shows its negative impact.
The Govt. and Non- Govt. agencies are surely working towards a better Hyderabad by adopting the Water Act, Air Act and timely monitoring the polluting industries. But the laws are not stringent enough to stop the industries from shutting down during inspection. The number of wastewater treatment plants have increased in last 5 yrs, but their efficient working is a question of concern. A small number of Hyderbadis on the other hand are working towards the cause by adopting the rain water harvesting system, but is it helping to improve the groundwater level? Though, 50% of the population opts to travel by public transport, is this helping in reduction of air pollution.
Culture and heritage is what makes India stand apart in the world map and it is environment which keeps it alive. When hyderabadis all over the world return to their home searching for their souls they find the soul of Hyderabad missing and its skeleton is also getting damaged. My city is shedding its pieces in order to mould itself and fit in the new generation.
But I believe the essence of my valley is always alive with its age old monuments, hospitality, umpteen chai's, autowala making bucks by giving a good ride of city even when your destination is next lane, splash of pan in new building complexes, narrow escape bike rides and the laid back attitude which reflects in hyderabadi one-liners.
And many more....
